Hydro-Québec

Transforming yesterday’s materials into tomorrow’s solutions

Challenge

Reusing and upcycling excess materials from Hydro-Québec’s office renovations

In today’s context, where sustainability is key to preserving the quality of our environments, Mine Urbaine tasked us with creating new furniture and installations using excess materials from Hydro-Québec’s office renovations. The challenge involved repurposing outdated furniture and surplus materials into valuable, modern solutions that align with sustainability goals. Throughout the project, we collaborated closely with the Hydro-Québec team to ensure the transformation of these materials into functional and eco-conscious designs, such as outdoor bike enclosures.
Process

Reimagining sustainable design with a closed-loop lifecycle and upcycling approach

Every solution was designed to maximize the potential of repurposed materials through upcycling while respecting Hydro-Québec’s brand identity. Custom and ready-to-use options were developed to transform these materials into tangible, eco-conscious outcomes that meet the needs and expectations of all stakeholders.
Result

A shelter showcasing upcycled materials

After evaluating several directions and concepts, we developed a solution that combines innovation with sustainability. While Hydro-Québec has not yet confirmed the implementation of this concept, it offers a promising and replicable model that could inspire similar projects. The final design delivers a sustainable solution that requires minimal maintenance, integrating a variety of upcycled materials from the old offices. By reducing costs associated with acquiring new raw materials, the shelter elevates the practice of giving materials a second life.
